Catherine Wayne is an internet celebrity famous for portraying a character called “Boxxy”. During the early days of YouTube, her alter ego got a lot of attention. Wayne suddenly disappeared as she got stalked and her name got doxxed.
Thankfully, Catherine resurfaced a few years later but appeared to be more normal and less entertaining. Now 31 years old, Catie is a voice actress but no longer uploads videos to YouTube.
Who Is Boxxy?
Boxxy was an internet personality who gained fame in the late 2000s. Wayne filmed two videos in January 2008 on Gaia Online, addressing her new gaming friends. The then 16-year-old uploaded them to YouTube under the username “boxxybabee”.
Despite her bizarre personality, guys were attracted to Boxxy due to her appearance. Her cute personality and iconic eyeliner look became her signature style. As a result, people were desperate to find out who she was. Later that year, the videos were reposted on i-am-bored.com and 4chan.
How Did She Get Popular?
The videos caused controversy on 4chan and users clashed over whether to favor or condemn the character. This resulted in some flame wars on the site and there were incidents of hacking. A DoS attack hit 4chan, forcing the site to go offline for several hours.
Boxxy’s YouTube channel also got hacked and her real identity was revealed. Up until that point she tried to hide her personal life. In January 2011, she uploaded a video pleading with followers to regain access to her old account. Around this time, Boxxy got some mentions in the media and was referenced in a local Fox 11 report on internet trolls.
What Happened to Boxxy?
The Guardian, which was reacting to Catherine’s presence, documented the division of netizens in an article. During this time, Wayne took a break from YouTube but returned in 2010 with a new channel called “ANewHopeee.”
In June 2011, she created a third YouTube account, Bodaciousboxxy and alleged in a video that the Boxxy in the January 2011 video is not the actual character but a girl who looks similar to her. Reportedly, she was hacked by a persona named Svetlana.
What Is She Doing Now?
After YouTube, she hosted the Animalist streaming show for Discovery Digital Networks from December 2013 until December 2014. In 2017, she voiced Marsha in Billy Dilley’s Super-Duper Subterranean Summer and featured in Isabelle Ruins Everything.
In 2018, Wayne kindly lent her voice to BoxxyQuest, an independent role-playing game that satirizes internet culture. Now 31 years old, Catie is still a voice actress but is no longer on YouTube. Based on her IMDB profile, she hasn’t got any new roles since 2019.
Twitter is the only platform she uses to share content. Aside from her newfound profession, she jumped on the NFT hype and listed “FOAR EVERYWUN FRUM BOXXY” NFT in OpenSea. Someone created a Facebook fan page for Boxxy and it now has over 65,000 followers.
