Gold Rush is one of most popular reality shows on the Discovery Channel and Todd Hoffman played an important role in the early days. Despite taking a four-year break from mining, Todd is back on Discovery with his show “Hoffman Family Gold”. Currently, Todd Hoffman has a net worth of $7 million.
Early Life
Hoffman was born on January 1, 1970 and is originally from Sandy, Oregon. His mother is Georgia, and his father Jack Hoffman also appears on Gold Rush. In 1980’s Jack worked as a gold prospector but never had much success.
Jack always dreamed of becoming rich through gold mining, and this became an inspiration to Todd. Before digging for gold, Todd operated a small airport in Oregon called Sandy River Airport. The airport is owned by Jack Hoffman and managed by his wife Georgia Hoffman.
Mining Career
Todd moved to Porcupine Creek, Alaska, with a group of six friends. Their plan was to find gold and establish a new settlement in the wild where they could live off the grid.
Eventually, the Hoffman crew became a part of Discovery Channel’s Gold Rush. They starred in the first season, and many of their gold discoveries were documented on the show. During his spell on the show, Hoffmann mined 8,000 ounces of gold, worth $16 million in today’s prices.
He also featured in some of the show’s spin-offs. Most of his crew left in season five, but he kept mining alongside his father. Three seasons later, in 2018, the Hoffman’s left the long-running series as Todd wanted to pursue a career as a singer.
Further Pursuits
After leaving Gold Rush, Todd Hoffman invested his earnings into various businesses. He spent time working on a newfound passion for music and uploaded covers onto YouTube. He set up a substance treatment facility in Portland but that appears to be no longer active.
Hoffman Family Gold
Todd co-founded Zum Media Productions and put money into another production company called Gold Standard Television. With ties to the media production industry, he started his latest show “Hoffman Family Gold” in 2022. His son Hunter plays a big role in the series and runs one of the wash plants. The mining expert invested in three wash plants and equipment worth $1 million.
Season two of Hoffman Family Gold finished airing in September 2023 and should be back for a third season in 2024. Viewing figures did drop in the second season, averaging over 650,000 views per episode according to ustvdb.com. Compared to season one, the early episodes received above one million views.
Net Worth and Earnings
Most of Hoffman’s wealth was earned through appearing on Gold Rush. When Todd was still on the show, he reportedly earned $25,000 per episode. In an interview with Oregonlive.com, Todd has responded to these rumors around pay saying “People think Discovery pays you a ton of money, and no, they don’t.”
Gold mining is a tough business due to the high costs and the difficulty in finding good land. Over the years, Todd and Dave Turin’s crew struggled and mostly lost money. But in season 6, the group did mine over 3,000 ounces. As a result, Todd relied on earnings from Discovery to make it worthwhile.
Now, the majority of his income comes from owning production companies. Todd Hoffman is worth an estimated $7 million and is the third richest miner on Gold Rush. Tony Beets is the richest miner with a $15 million net worth and Parker Schnabel has a $10 million fortune.
Personal Life
Todd is married to Shawana Hoffman and they’ve been together for over 25 years. The couple has two children, Hunter and Hudson. Hunter regularly features with his father on reality TV and has become more comfortable on camera. Todd is passionate about cars, and also owns a motorhome.
