At first glance, marrying a guy like Elon Musk would seem to be every gold digger’s dream come true. It comes with no worries that the plastic will ever max out, and the lifestyle choices include being able to reach for the stars, both literally and figuratively.
As Justine Musk found out, the gig’s not as easy as it looks. Elon has cycled through a lot of wives over the years, but at least Justine can lay claim to being the first. Marrying Elon has helped make her a rich woman, but there’s a lot more to her story.
First Meeting
Surprisingly, the first meeting between Justine Wilson and Elon Musk was relatively ordinary, but it was hardly love at first sight. They met as college students at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, and Justine described Elon as a “clean-cut, upper-class boy with a South African accent.”
She turned him down when Elon first asked her out, but Musk has since become known as a rather persistent, ambitious fellow, and after college they reconnected. Justine was working as a bartender while developing her chops as a writer – she actually has a degree in English literature – and when they were able to reconcile, she moved from Canada to California to be with Musk.
Married Life
Their wedding was a happy event, but tragedy struck two years after getting married when their first child, Nevada Alexander, died as a result of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The tragedy sent the marriage spiraling sideways, and Justine has subsequently said she buried her feelings by acceding to Elon’s wishes to get pregnant again as soon as possible.
Over the next five years, she gave birth to twins, then triplets, which obviously transformed her life completely, and Justine has also discussed the impact of a car crash that altered her life. Not surprisingly, having a family didn’t save her marriage.
The couple tried counseling together, but after three sessions Elon gave her an ultimatum – fix the marriage now or a divorce will immediately follow. According to Justine, Elon filed for divorce the next day, and she described her reaction as “numb, but strangely relieved.”
Justine Musk’s Wealth
The media describes Justine Musk as Elon’s “starter wife,” and while it has given her a net worth of $3 million. That number pales to the string of zeros that now characterize the billionaire’s bank account.
She described her feelings about Musk’s wealth as “abstract and unreal,” but the money did give her a healthy cushion to start her life as a writer, which seems to have culminated with the release of a series of fantasy novels published by Penguin Books between 2005 and 2010.
What is She Doing Now?
Justine now spends her days as a full-time mom to the first five kids in Musk’s ever-growing brood. She seems to have mostly gotten over her bitterness toward Elon for “rendering her so disposable,” to use her words.
She also seems rather amused by her ex’s busy dating life and his proclivity for procreation, and deserves some serious credit for keeping whatever dating life she maintains out of sight from the media given her last name and the level of visibility that automatically comes with it.
