Dentists recommend people to brush their teeth for at least two minutes, but some ignore this rule. Dr. Bobbi Peterson created the electric Big Mouth Toothbrush, which has an ultra-wide brushing surface to reduce the time needed for cleaning your pearly whites. Bobbi pitched her business on Shark Tank and got a deal with Barbara Corcoran. As of 2024, Big Mouth Toothbrush is worth an estimated $1.5 million.
Bobbi Peterson’s Background
Bobbi Peterson hails from Newark, New Jersey and is the youngest of seven kids! Peterson became a doctor of dental surgery after graduating from Howard University and also studied biology at Drexel University.
As the daughter of a dentist, she learned about the importance of oral hygiene at an early age. The entrepreneur specialized in orthopedic dentistry while taking her residency at Kings County.
Once she completed her education, Dr. Peterson started her own practice in Brooklyn, New York. She launched Aces Braces in 2008, and her practice has been in business for over 15 years.
Founding Big Mouth Toothbrush
When the pandemic restrictions loosened, Bobbi noticed more clients were suffering from gum diseases. She conducted a study and found out that most people don’t follow dentists’ advice.
Later on, her brother mentioned that modern toothbrushes are getting skinnier. This inspired her to design an electric toothbrush that can save you time.
The product’s most notable feature is the extra-large head that covers a wide area and reaches all angles. It also has five cleaning options and one charge lasts for 50 uses. Peterson called her product Big Mouth Toothbrush and launched her business in 2022.
Getting on Shark Tank
The product became popular among Bobbi’s clients, which includes some celebrities. As a result, her brand got featured in media publications such as Forbes, Brooklyn Paper, and LA Weekly.
As her new business venture caught fire, the dentist was eager to expand operations but needed to raise capital. Peterson is a huge Shark Tank fan and always had the show in mind as her startup grew.
The businesswoman delivered a confident pitch and came in at a reasonable valuation. Kevin O’Leary waited until the other Sharks dropped out to get the best deal. Luckily for Bobbi, Barbara Corcoran swooped back in to steal the deal!
Life After Shark Tank
Their episode aired in March 2023 and the Big Mouth Toothbrush sold out within 24 hours. Bobbi described the experience as one of the most stressful and nerve wracking moments of her life. Thankfully she was able to keep it together under the bright lights. There’s no evidence to suggest the deal with Barbara has closed.
The market for electric toothbrushes is seeing steady growth and Big Mouth should benefit from the trend. The global market is forecasted to grow from $3.06 billion in 2021 to $4.28 billion by 2026. In addition, over 131.43 million Americans used electronic toothbrushes in 2020.
Viewers can purchase her products only at BigMouthToothbrush.com but that could change after the exposure from Shark Tank. The Original Big Mouth Toothbrush has a clean 5-star rating from 95 reviews on their website. Currently, the top selling product retails for $99 and the business is valued at $1.5 million.
