Jason McOmber’s Background
Jason McOmber is from Salt Lake City, Utah and graduated with a degree in Technical Sales from Weber State University. While studying, he worked as a lease advisory group associate at Varilease.
When he was about to graduate, Jason was offered a prominent position at Groove Satellite and Entertainment. He served as the VP of Sales for over three years.
In 2014, the Utah native was recruited as Director of Sales for DSI Systems Inc. Within six years, he was promoted to Senior Director of Sales and was recently promoted to Vice President in the enterprise sales department.
A Festive Idea is Born
After a couple of drinks at a Christmas party, Jason tried putting all sorts of stuff on his beard. Everyone thought it was funny, and it inspired him to make legitimate holiday decorations for bearded people.
He started selling Beardaments in 2015 and the colored ornaments could be clipped to almost anything, especially hair. Jason has strong experience in digital marketing and used his SEO skills to drive traffic from Google.
In the first year, the company did an impressive $80,000 in revenue. The following year, he generated over $155,000 and in year three, sales reached over $462,000.
Making Holiday History on Shark Tank
Although it’s a seasonal business, Beardament profits were steadily improving, In 2019, McOmber applied to get onto Shark Tank to turn the gimmick into a million dollar business. He appeared on season 11 of Shark Tank, seeking $150,000 for a 10% equity stake.
He entered the Tank with Santa Claus and an elf. To truly accentuate the holiday spirit, he made his pitch in the form of a spoken poem. Once he talked about sales, the Sharks were pleasantly surprised.
After hearing the numbers, the Sharks realized that the founder was doing well on his own. Kevin O’Leary was the only one interested. He offered $150,000 for 25%, and Jason accepted the deal.
Post-Shark Tank Success
The exposure from Shark Tank helped to make over $600,000 in revenue for 2019. No recent sales figures have been released but Beardaments should be making over $1 million. Due to its novelty aspect, they have featured in publications such as the Daily Mail and Cosmopolitan. Also, their videos on social media have over 200 million views!
As expected, the company has expanded the range of products. They now sell women’s hair accessories, shirts, earrings, and sweaters. You purchase them on Amazon and through their website, Beardaments.com. The Beardaments Lights now sell for $19 including 12 beard ornaments.
On Amazon, the original Beardament set has a 4.4-star rating from 3,593 reviews. The Christmas products are selling well, and the company is currently planning to make beard decors for other holidays. Currently, Beardaments is worth an estimated $2 million. Jason has kept his full-time job and has no plans to quit.
