Andrew was born in New York City on February 19, 1977. His mother, Joan, is a playwright, while his father, Laurence, is a partner at the law firm Cahill Gordon & Reindel. Both of them exposed their son to journalism at a young age.
As a senior at Scarsdale High School, Sorkin interned at The New York Times. The aspiring journalist continued to work for the iconic media outlet after graduating in 1995.
In 1996, he also spent time working for Business Week, a weekly business magazine. The New Yorker studied communications at Cornell University and got his bachelor’s degree in 1999.
