Jamell Maurice Demons, better known as YNW Melly, is an American rapper who is currently incarcerated at Broward County Jail, Florida. He has collaborated with big musicians in the past, including Kanye West and Juice Wrld. After being convicted of the double-murder, his breakout song “Murder on My Mind” gained him even more exposure. But where is YNW Melly now?
The artist was born in Florida on May 1, 1999. He was raised by his single mother, Jamie Demons-King. He didn’t know his father. Jamie became pregnant with him when she was 14 years old.
His mother struggled to cover living expenses after moving to an impoverished part of Gifford. Jamell became a member of the Bloods gang at an early age.
In late 2015, he served several months in prison after being charged with discharging a firearm in public, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery. He was guilty of shooting at a gathering of students.
He began sharing his music on SoundCloud when he was 15 years old. However, it was during his time in prison that he grew more serious about his musical career. Behind jail, he’s penned a number of songs, many of them are based on his childhood hardships.
In 2016, Demons took on the stage moniker YNW Melly. Jamell, Cortlen “YNW Bortlen” Henry, Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr., and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams comprised the hip-hop group YNW.
Demons published his first production, an EP called Collect Call, in late 2017 while still imprisoned. He followed up with a slew of singles in 2018 that got a lot of traction on YouTube.
Mixtapes and Debut Album
He released his debut mixtape, I Am You, in August 2018. It hit number 192 on the Billboard 200 on January 10, 2019. Demons issued We All Shine, his second mixtape, on January 18, 2019, while incarcerated.
Melly vs. Melvin, Melly’s debut album, was released on November 22, 2019. It was his highest-charting project, peaking at number eight on the Billboard 200.
He has more than 200 million Spotify streams and around ten million monthly listeners. Murder on My Mind is his most streamed song. As of 2022, he has an estimated net worth of $150,000.
YNW Melly was at the top of his game when he was detained in February 2019 and accused of two charges of first-degree murder. It was in relation to the October 2018 gunshot deaths of two YNW colleagues identified YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Demons allegedly colluded with fellow YNW rapper Cortlen Henry to orchestrate the double-murder of Williams and Thomas Jr. They made it look as if they were killed in a drive-by shooting.
According to the authorities, Henry drove the victims to the hospital, where they eventually died from their injuries. On February 13, 2019, Demons surrendered.
Jamell made moves to get an early release in 2020. However, it did not work. The state of Florida declared in April 2021 that if the rapper was found guilty, a death sentence would be sought.
