YNW Melly is an American rapper who is currently incarcerated at Broward County Jail, Florida. He has collaborated with big musicians in the past, including Kanye West and Juice Wrld. After being convicted of a double-murder, his breakout song “Murder on My Mind” got him huge exposure. But where is YNW Melly now?
Background
Jamell Maurice Demons was born in Florida on May 1, 1999 and was raised by a single mother, Jamie Demons-King. Jamie got pregnant with him when she was 14 years old. His mother struggled to cover living expenses and Jamell became a member of the Bloods gang at an early age.
In late 2015, he served a few months in prison for discharging a firearm in public, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery. He was guilty of shooting at a group of students.
Music Career
He began sharing music on SoundCloud when he was 15 years old. However, while in prison he got more serious about his music career and penned a number of songs, many of them based on his struggles as a child.
In 2016, Demons took on the stage moniker YNW Melly. Jamell, Cortlen “YNW Bortlen” Henry, Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr., and Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams comprised the hip-hop group YNW.
Demons released his first production, an EP called Collect Call, in late 2017 and followed up with a slew of singles in 2018 that got a lot of traction on YouTube. He has more than 200 million Spotify streams and around ten million monthly listeners.
Murder Charge
YNW Melly was at the top of his game when he was detained in February 2019 and accused of two charges of first-degree murder. It was in relation to the deaths of YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser, in Fort Lauderdale in October 2018.
Demons allegedly colluded with fellow YNW rapper Cortlen Henry to orchestrate the double-murder of Williams and Thomas Jr. They made it look as if they were killed in a drive-by shooting.
According to the authorities, Henry drove the victims to the hospital, where they eventually died from their injuries. On February 13, 2019, YNW Melly surrendered. He was found guilty and was sentenced to life in jail without the chance of parole for 25 years.
Release Date
Jamell made moves to get an early release in 2020 but they failed. As of November 9, 2022, if the rapper is found guilty of murder, a death sentence will be sought. On April 19 2022, YNW Melly posted on Twitter with renewed hope of getting released in 2022. It appears the tweet has only given fans false hope as authorities haven’t made an announcement about his release date.
Melly recently sent a letter to his mother, claiming he was in fear of his life and was living in harsh conditions. He revealed โI am the only inmate being housed on the vacant unit, with no phone privilege, no television and no access to a newspaper.โ
