The movie Ingrid Goes West is getting a wide release this week. It’s not a blockbuster film by any means, but rather a somewhat small black comedy starring Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen. The reviews are mostly solid, and the film seems to be at least an adequate satire/sendup of social media obsession and Instagram celebrity. You know, the kind of film that was inevitable to be made, and Plaza and Olsen are fine actresses who are eminently qualified for their respective roles in Ingrid Goes West. This isn’t about the movie, though. It’s about Plaza and Olsen playing with kids toys for a YouTube video.
The video was made to promote the film, naturally, by Glamour Magazine‘s YouTube page. The premise is supremely simply. It is what was just described above. They give Plaza and Olsen some modern kids toys and they goof around with them and crack wise. It’s the sort of conceptual promotional piece that has become increasingly common in the modern media landscape. Maybe it is even the sort of thing that Ingrid Goes West would lampoon, but yet here we are.
Naturally, Plaza is funny in the video, because she is an intrinsically funny woman whose offbeat personality is always welcome. Olsen, though, is also a delight, and in particular these two together make a great team. It’s fun to watch Plaza and Olsen just screw around, and that definitely could encourage people to see them act together. Frankly, though, it really just makes you hope they can do more projects together. Hell, just give them their own YouTube series where they just chit chat and joke around doing whatever they want. It’d be awesome.
