Recently, we found out that there are plans in the works for a Joker origin story produced by Martin Scorsese. It will not involve Jared Leto as Joker, but Leto is not done playing Batman’s greatest nemesis. In addition to the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel, Leto is scheduled to star in a movie alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn focused on the two.
The two actors will be reprising their roles from Suicide Squad. While a lot of people were excited to see both Joker and Harley Quinn, longtime paramours in the DC universe, in that movie, Suicide Squad turned out to be a bit of a dud. In particular, Leto’s portrayal of Joker has been divisive, at best. That being said, the character remains perhaps the most-iconic comic book villain, and perhaps the smaller scale of a Joker and Harley Quinn movie will help matters.
The film will reportedly be written and directed by Glenn Ficara and John Requa, who wrote and directed Crazy, Stupid, Love. They also are executive producers of weepie drama This Is Us, which doesn’t seem to have much in common with an “insane and twisted love story” like this movie is purported to be. This will definitely be a change of pace for Ficara and Requa, but they certainly have a lot to work with. That is, as long as we don’t have Joker fatigue by then.
