Early Life
Rafael Edward “Ted” Cruz was born in Alberta, Canada, on December 22, 1970. He has two half-sisters. Cruz’s father relocated to Texas when he abandoned the family in 1974. Cruz’s parents reunited later that year. However, they separated again in 1997.
Cruz went to two private schools, Faith West Academy and Second Baptist High School. In the latter, young Rafael graduated as valedictorian in the year 1988.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in public policy from Princeton University in 1992. He went on to Harvard Law School, earning a Juris Doctor magna cum laude in 1995.
Legal Career
After graduating from law school, Cruz clerked under Judge Michael Luttig and then for chief justice William Hubbs Rehnquist. Cruz worked for Cooper & Kirk, PLLC, from 1997 to 1998 after completing his clerkships.
He served as a domestic political adviser for George Bush’s campaign for president in 1999. Then, he was appointed to the post of Solicitor General of Texas, where he served from 2003 to 2008.
Cruz returned to private practice after leaving the role of Solicitor General. He worked for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in Houston, where he frequently represented business clients. He also lectured at the University of Texas Law School for a short time.
Political Career
Ted Cruz competed for the Republican nomination in 2012 as a Tea Party representative. He faced and bested Democratic candidate Paul Sadler in the main election.
He endorsed 105 of his own legislation during his time as a US Senator. Despite his denials, he was also one of the officials who contributed to the 2013 government shutdown. He has always been critical of different political parties.
His candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 was widely expected due to his outspokenness in the Senate. But this didn’t come to reality. More recently, Cruz got a lot of hate for a tone-deaf tweet he sent out on February 26, 2022, criticizing the Republican Party.
Net Worth and Salary
Cruz is paid $174,000 every year as a junior senator in the US. According to reports, Ted’s assets are virtually entirely invested in equities, bonds, and real estate. In just 2017, Cruz made more than $33,000 in dividends and interest.
He is also pro cryptocurrency. In early 2022, the republican disclosed that he spent anywhere from $15,001 to $50,000 on Bitcoin. Now, his wealth has built up to $4 million.
