Look, nobody takes the Guinness Book of World Records seriously. They don’t even have a TV show anymore. In addition to all the weird and gross records that aren’t actually accomplishments, they have so many esoteric, convoluted records now that it doesn’t seem all that hard to even get in the record books (if they even still make an actual book). That being said, it’s probably not a bad thing for a video game to be able to champion having a few records to its name, and RuneScape has picked up three world records recently to add to its resume.
RuneScape is one of the biggest MMORPGs of all time, and though it was released originally back in 2001 it’s still going strong. That’s part of why it now finds itself holding a few new records. Now, a couple of those records are kind of the iffy variety. One is “Most prolifically-updated MMORPG video game,” with 1,014 updates. Another is “Most original pieces of music in a video game (including expansions.” Neither of those is terribly exciting. On the other hand, RuneScape also now has the record for “Most users of an MMO video game,” at 254,994,744, which is actually significant and impressive.
Nobody is likely to start playing RuneScape at this point because of a few Guinness records, but for a game that has been around so long, it’s probably nice to get recognized. By the way, the game already had a couple records, including “Most fish in a video game.” Now there’s a record worth having.
