Sony is hoping the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming will allow them to build out a universe of Spider-Man-related films. They are already making a Venom movie, which we know will star Tom Hardy as the titular Venom (which is good!) and which will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (which may not be good!). Now, it seems a new actor is close to being added to the film. Riz Ahmed is in talks to join Venom.
You likely know Ahmed best from starring in the terrorism comedy Four Lions. Or, maybe, you know him as Bodhi Rook from Rogue One. He also starred in HBO’s The Night Of, and he raps under the (admittedly not terribly imaginative) name Riz MC. Ahmed is a fine actor, and he definitely would make a good addition to Venom.
What we don’t know is what role he will have in the film. The Hollywood Reporter says that it won’t be Carnage, so don’t get your hopes up there. However, reportedly they are looking to cast somebody as Carnage, so there will likely be at least one more big addition to the cast.
Nevertheless, Hardy and Ahmed is a strong start for Venom, which has a lot riding on it, from a universe-building perspective. The movie is scheduled to come out October 5, 2018.
