Marvel has its fingers in a lot of pies. In addition to all its movies, there are a variety of TV shows featuring Marvel characters, on both traditional television and Netflix. Now, Marvel has a show coming out on Netflix’s competitor Hulu, a show called Runaways. Well, technically it’s called Marvel’s Runaways, but by this point we might as well just stop including the “Marvel” part in all these titles, because they always stick it on there but it isn’t instructive or pertinent. Anyway, part of what makes the Marvel projects so notable is that they tend to be interconnected in some way. Will that be the case with Runaways? We have the answer, and it’s “Kind of.”
Well, if the question is whether or not Runaways takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the answer is yes. However, the question is about what that means. Executive producer Jeph Loeb summed it up as such: “It all lives in the same world, how it’s connected and where it’s connected and what it’s going to be connected to remains to be seen.”
If one were to speculate, Runaways will probably interact with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the same way the other Marvel shows do. That is to say, Runaways will be impacted by the events of the Marvel movies, but nothing in the Marvel movies will be impacted by the action of Runaways. The movies drive the universe, and the TV shows are along for the ride.
Runaways is about a group of teenagers who find out their parents are supervillains, and the fallout from that. Apparently while they deal with their teenage angst, they’ll be hearing about what Iron Man and friends are up to. Maybe they’ll even hear about that Infinity War that’s coming up.
