Before Google became the dominant search engine, Mosaic was considered the first widely used web browser in the world. One of its co-founders is Marc Andreessen, a software engineer, investor, and entrepreneur.
He’s established and invested into many innovative tech companies to become a billionaire. As of 2022, Marc Andreessen has a net worth of $1.6 billion according to Forbes.
Marc Lowell Andreessen was born on July 9, 1971 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, but he grew up in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. His father Lowell worked in the agricultural sector and his mother Patricia worked for Lands’ End, a catalogue retailer
He studied computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Young Marc interned twice at IBM as an undergraduate, assisting in the development of AIX graphics software.
The Iowa-born techie also worked at his university’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), where he learned a lot about the world wide web. Andreessen got his bachelor’s degree in 1993.
While working at NCSA, Marc had the idea of building a web browser that could display integrated graphics, and Mosaic was the result. After graduation, he worked at Enterprise Integration Technologies and met Silicon Graphics founder Jim Clark.
Clark saw the potential in Mosaic, so he helped turn it into a business. It was later rebranded as Netscape, and Andreessen earned a fortune after it was sold to AOL for $4.3 billion in 1999. After this, he co-founded Loudcloud, now called Opsware, one of the first cloud hosting services.
In 2007, it was purchased by IT company Hewlett Packard Enterprise for $1.6 billion. Before this, he helped create the Ning platform for social media networks. It was eventually sold to Mode Media for $150 million in 2011.
Marc Andreessen also became known as a super angel investor. He and his longstanding business associate, Ben Horowitz, invested approximately $80 million in about 45 startups between 2005 and 2009.
This is why they launched the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, also referred to as a16z. Marc’s most successful investments include Twitter, Pinterest, GitHub, Facebook, Skype, Foursquare, and LinkedIn. He also became part of eBay’s board of directors.
He has advocated for Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general. He even raised the largest crypto fund at $4.5 billion. He opposes the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) funds, calling out their hypocritical initiatives.
Net Worth and Earnings
Marc Andreessen made his fortune exploring new internet technologies and selling his businesses at the right time. Both the web browser Mosaic and the cloud hosting service Loudcloud were some of the first of their respective kinds.
After selling his online companies for billions, he focused more on venture capitalism with Andreessen Horowitz. His crypto portfolio is undisclosed, but he started the a16z Crypto venture capital fund to invest in web3 startups. His estimated net worth is around $1.6 billion.
In 2006, Marc married the founder of the Silicon Valley Social Venture Fund, Laura Arrillaga. She is also the daughter of the late real estate mogul John Arrillaga. Marc and Laura have one son together and in 2021 they purchased a mansion in Malibu for $177 million.
