Some movies are considered sacred by many, so remaking them leads to a lot of aggravation from people on the internet. License to Drive is not one of those movies. Sure, there are those who have a smidge of nostalgia for the 1988 comedy. After all, it starred Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, making it one of a handful of “the two Coreys” movies that defined the ’80s to some. That being said, there likely won’t be too much handwringing over the fact License to Drive is getting remade.
Well, perhaps that’s an optimistic assertion. For you see, they aren’t just remaking License to Drive. They are rebooting it with female leads. The original may not have the adoring fan base that, say, the original Ghostbusters has (because Ghostbusters is great and License to Drive decidedly is not), but there is still the potential for some people to grouse about swapping out the boys for girls. That’s just the sort of thing people like to complain about on the internet.
That being said, the new License to Drive will rise or fall based on who they find to replace Haim and Feldman as the leads. The premise is exceedingly simple: a teenager who fails his driving test takes his friends out for a joyride in his grandfather’s classic car. It’s the kind of movie that’s all about execution.
