If you use your Apple AirPods regularly then losing them could prove a bit of a nightmare for you. They are small, easy to misplace and if they are dead, then they can prove difficult to find. When it comes to locating them, the Find My app is a great help but how will you know if the battery has died?

There are some options available to you that will enable you to understand how long it has been since they were last charged.

    Use “Find My” Network

It might be possible to track your AirPods, AirPods Max and AirPods Pro using the Find My network if you have lost them. This will be an easy option to take advantage of if they still have battery remaining. However, when the earbuds no longer have power, the network will not be able to create a connection with your device and that can make it difficult to locate them.

The Find My app works more effectively when you are looking for your AirPods separately. What this means is that it works best when you are attempting to locate either one or both of your earbuds when they are no longer located in their case.

If they are within the case and you are unable to find them, then it is still possible to find them using the Find My app. However, you will only be able to locate them based on where they were when they were last used. If your AirPods are still charged and they are within 30 to 50ft of your location, you can even play a sound to locate them which makes it easier.

Finding AirPods When They Are Dead

If your AirPods are dead, you might think that you won’t see them again. After all, they no longer have power and they are offline. However, all is not lost as your next option is to check their last location. This is because the Find My app won’t be able to locate them if they have no power but you might be able to get an idea of a location when they were connected last. To do this:

    • Go to the “Find My” app on your device
    • Head to the devices tab
    • Select AirPods from the list
    • Then browse the map to determine their last known location

If you do have a location available, then there is a good chance that you might be able to locate them as there is every chance that they were connected when you lost or misplaced them.

    Set Up Lost Mode

If you have 3rd Generation AirPods then you can turn on Lost Mode. This means that you can create a message with your email address and phone number that will be displayed on the iPhone of the individual who finds your AirPods.

    This can be done by:

    • Open the “Find My” app
    • Go to devices and select your AirPods
    • Scroll down to Mark as Lost and activate it
    • Then follow the instructions on your screen to have your information displayed for your missing AirPods

So, losing your AirPods might leave you devastated but you do have several options available to help you locate them, so all is not lost once you realise you have lost or misplaced them.
