19-year-old Greta Thunberg is an environmental activist and climate campaigner who rose to fame with her 2018 Global Climate Summit speech that challenged world leaders to do something about climate change. She left school to protest, and in the process, started a global movement.
As of 2022, Greta Thunberg has an estimated net worth of $1 million. Some sources have estimated her wealth to be $46 million but there is no evidence to back up this claim.
Early Life
On January 3, 2003, Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Damn, her full name is a mouth full! Malena, an opera musician with a net worth of $1.2 million, and Svante Thunberg, an actor worth $1.5 million, are her parents. She also has a little sister called Beata.
Greta first learned about environmental issues when she was eight, in 2011. Knowing this depressed her. Later, she was diagnosed with OCD, selective mutism, and Asperger syndrome. This also pushed her to be vegan in 2015.
She struggled with depression for years before skipping school to protest at environmental strikes. Greta went to Franska Skolan from 2010 until 2018 and then went to Kringlaskolan, finishing 9th grade in 2019.
Rise to Fame
At age 15, Greta made her public debut in 2018 and organized a student demonstration outside the Swedish parliament. Her purpose was to put pressure on the government to take stronger action. She held rallies every Friday rather than attending school, which went viral on social media, sparking similar protests in other countries.
Following Thunberg’s efforts becoming a sensation, school strikes broke out internationally every week. People all over the world began gathering outside of their countries’ government buildings in coordinated action.
Further Initiatives
Since she gained prominence, Greta Thunberg continued with her environmental agenda. In 2019, the young activist traveled across the Atlantic in a zero-carbon yacht to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
At the conference, Thunberg passionately scolded world leaders that none of them were doing enough. This is her most memorable address and pointed out that the lack of action damages the future of the youth.
According to the teen, emissions should be reduced in order to maintain temperature rises below 1.5 degrees Celsius. This number is beyond what experts have warned that the effects of climate change will become considerably more severe.
Net Worth
With her efforts and ideology, the young advocate was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year in 2019. At the age of 16, making the youngest person to ever receive the honor.
She has also been nominated for a Nobel Prize twice. In 2020, Thunberg was awarded the Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity, and she aims to contribute her €1 million cash prize through her foundation. Still, with her accolades and influence, she has a fortune worth $1 million.
Personal Life
Though she is very vocal about her goals, Greta has not shared much about her personal life. It isn’t known if she is in a relationship and has stated that she gets most of her support from her parents.
