The premiere of season 7 of Game of Thrones was massively successful, to nobody’s surprise. The ratings were fantastic, setting a new high for the show, presumably owing to new fans binging Game of Thrones between seasons. However, the season premiere wasn’t kind to everybody. The fatality-filled show has claimed another victim: Ed Sheeran’s Twitter account.
As you may have heard, Sheeran made a cameo in the season seven premiere as a member of the Lannister army. It had been announced at last year’s South by Southwest that the popular musician would be making a cameo, and he certainly has a look that fits into the world of Game of Thrones. However, despite his large fan base, not everybody was excited to see Sheeran’s famous face pop up. It was, to say the least, a polarizing cameo.
One assumes that the angry Thrones fans who didn’t like seeing Sheeran on their beloved show about magic and dragons took to Twitter to voice their displeasure. This seems to have provided a tipping point for Sheeran, who had already previously said he wasn’t going to use the social media platform anymore. Now, he has taken the full step of getting rid of his account entirely, so you’ll have to direct your aggravation at a guy being on a TV show elsewhere.
However, if you liked seeing Sheeran on Game of Thrones, there may be some good news. He’ll be popping up on The Simpsons next season, albeit in animated form.
