Direct from this morning’s E3 2017 Nintendo Spotlight press conference comes a brand-new trailer for Super Mario Odyssey. It appeared at the very tail end of the presentation to close out the show. This new Mario platformer will be coming to Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017.
Here’s the trailer in all its glory:
Though not seen in the trailer above, the original presentation began with a ferocious-looking T-rex roaring. It’s only when the camera zooms in closer that we notice that the T-rex is wearing a Mario cap with eyes. That was the first clue that the next trailer would be about Mario…and, wow, was it!
The trailer begins in a realistic (well, for Nintendo visuals) metropolitan environment, like New York City. Appropriately, it’s called New Donk City according to one of the billboards. As the camera pans street-level, we see a taxi zoom over a manhole cover right before Mario leaps out of it with a signature “Waaahooooo!”
From there, we’re treated to more than two minutes of crazy jumping and coin-collecting through a series of fantastic environments, beginning with the aforementioned city. Possibly most impressive about this open-world environment is that Mario isn’t limited to a horizontal plane, he can jump and climb up buildings.
A skyship appears to whisk Mario off to other areas, with most having a more Mario-esque aesthetic than the city. The first is a sandy desert with a fairy-tale village; the next is a lush green forest. This new trailer shows off the sheer diversity of settings that you’ll get to play through in Super Mario Odyssey.
Bowser appears to be up to his old tricks again, as we get to see at least one encounter between him and Mario. And a tear almost came to my eye when we see Mario standing forlornly in front of a billboard advertising the wedding between Bowser and Peach – “A royal wedding.” Naturally, Bowser is gripping Peach by the claw while she looks on horrified.
The action concludes with a look at one of the boss battles that takes place in the city, with Mario facing off against a giant mechanized centipede on top of a building spire. It’s truly epic.
Previously announced to be coming Holiday 2017, it’s a relief to see that the launch date for Super Mario Odyssey is now a firm October 27 – well before the start of the holiday season. Guess I know what I’ll be doing for Halloween!
