Dana Marie Perino was born on May 9, 1972. She was born in Evanston, Wyoming, but she was raised in Denver, Colorado. Perino grew up in a family of Italian origin.
Ponderosa High School was her alma mater in Parker, Denver. Perino earned a degree in mass communications from Colorado State University-Pueblo. She had minors in Spanish and political science. At the university, she was employed at KTSC-TV, the Rocky Mountain PBS branch.

In 1998, she traveled to England following Schaefer’s announcement that he would retire. Perino went back to Washington in 2001 and took a job as a spokesperson for the Justice Department, where she stayed for two years.
Under George Bush, she soon climbed to the post of Deputy Press Secretary. She functioned as Acting White House Press Secretary when Tony Snow was undergoing cancer therapy. Eventually, she became the full-time Press Secretary and Assistant to the President from 2007 to 2009.
