Even if it feels like Netflix has more original programming than anybody could ever watch, they still keep pulling out exciting announcements. First, we heard that David Letterman is going to have his own show on the streaming platform. Now, the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan, are also coming to Netflix with their own series.
Yes, the Oscar-winning directors are coming to television. Sure, their iconic movie Fargo has been adapted (sort of) into a TV show, but they don’t have much to do with it. Now, they have their own anthology series in the works called The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. The series is of the western variety, so that’s the particular motif the Coens are working in. So expect something in the No Country for Old Men, True Grit vein it would seem.
Each of the six episodes will “feature a distinct story about the American West,” and Tim Blake Nelson will star, and presumably tie the stories together, as the titular Buster Scruggs. Nelson previously starred in the Coen’s O Brother, Where Art Thou?, so he should be able to fit well into the Coen Brothers’ idiosyncratic worldview.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will hit Netflix in 2018. Given how Joel and Ethan operate, it wouldn’t be surprising if this only lasted for six episodes. Nevertheless, those six episodes are worth getting really excited about.
