The current US Senate Majority Leader is Democrat politician Chuck Schumer. It’s a seat one could say he deserves as he has been a senator for more than two decades. He was also a Minority Leader in the past. In addition, he serves as the Dean of the New York congressional delegation. As of 2022, Chuck Schumer has a net worth of $900,000.
Early Life
Charles Ellis Schumer was born on November 23, 1950. He was raised by Selma and Abraham Schumer in Midwood, Brooklyn. Their family is of Ukrainian origin. Chuck is also the second cousin of comedian Amy Schumer.
He went to a couple of public schools in his home city before graduating from James Madison High School as valedictorian of the class of 1967. While studying there, he participated in the student quiz show “It’s Academic”.
The Brooklyn native went to Harvard College and studied chemistry until changing his major to social studies. He graduated magna cum laude in 1971. Three years later, he got his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.
Career Beginnings
Schumer passed the New York state bar after finishing law school, but he didn’t practice law. Instead, he chose to become a politician. From 1975 to 1981, he never lost an election in the New York State Assembly.
During Bill Clinton’s presidency, Chuck became part of the House Judiciary Committee. He first joined the United States Senate in 1999, representing New York.
He has been a senator ever since. Schumer has been a key consensus builder on imperative matters like immigration, health care, and financial regulation. This is perhaps why he became a congressional delegation dean.
Democratic Party
Schumer served as the chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee from 2005 to 2009. He was responsible for raising funds and recruiting Democratic candidates. Later on, he took on more critical tasks for the Democratic Party.
In 2016, the Harvard graduate was chosen to become the Senate Minority Leader. He was expected to be the replacement for former politician Harry Reid, who announced his plan to retire in 2015.
He maintained this position before moving up as Senate Majority Leader in Joe Biden’s administration. In early 2021, he took over the office of Republican Mitch McConnell.
Net Worth and Earnings
As a US senator, Chuck Schumer’s salary is $193,400 annually, as per a 2019 report on congressional salaries. His new position as Majority Leader might boost this figure in the coming years. Before this, he had already built a substantial fortune at the New York State Assembly.
Apart from politics, he is also a published author. In 2007, he released his first and only book titled Positively American. Besides that, Charles doesn’t spend time on extra work. His political undertakings are the biggest factor in his $900,000 net worth.
Personal Life
Chuck Schumer got married to corporate executive Iris Weinshall in 1980. The couple has been blessed with two wonderful children named Alison and Jessica. Their family resides in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
