It’s time to leave your pineapple under the sea and head to the Great White Way. There’s a SpongeBob Squarepants musical coming to Broadway in November. Yes, you read that right. There is a musical about a cartoon sponge-boy, and it will be performed on the prestigious grounds of Broadway.
If you aren’t familiar with SpongeBob Squarepants, then you are either over the age of 25 or don’t like to smoke weed. It’s a goofy Nickelodeon cartoon, arguably the most successful in the channel’s history, and it’s about the titular SpongeBob and his friends and also a fast food restaurant under the sea. It’s silly and dumb, like any kid’s cartoon worth its salt, but a devoted audience grew up on the show, and they are now old enough to justify a Broadway musical, evidently.
The play originally opened in Chicago, and it features an impressive list of musicians who provided songs for the musical. We’re talking the likes of John Legend, The Flaming Lips, and the legendary David Bowie. Previews start November 6, with the show officially opening December 4. Here’s a description of the plot:
“Stakes are higher than ever before as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage.”
Odd are that unexpected hero is a porous gentleman with square trousers.
