DotEmu and Lizardcube’s excellent Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is coming to PlayStation 4 as a physical release for a limited time. Limited Run Games will be handling its distribution, and it will be available this summer via LimitedRunGames.com.
Previously, the game was only available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch as a digital copy, so this is great news for anyone looking to preserve what is by all accounts a fantastic action-adventure platformer. Originally released in 1989 for the Sega Master System as Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap, this release is a brand new remake with completely new hand-drawn graphics, score, and updated code.
It follows the events of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, where players must overcome a bizarre curse that has turned Wonder Boy into a lizard. To that end, you’ve got to travel all around the world and defeat the dragons waiting out there so you can go back to normal. It released to mostly positive reviews from critics, with praise heaped upon it as one of the best ways to remaster and update a game for new, modern audiences.
In a world where retro remakes are often handed out with little or no updates and exorbitant price tags, this Wonder Boy sequel (if you want to call it that) is a passion project from people with a clear eye for quality. If you can’t wait to check it out with a physical copy, then you can always play it right now via Steam or via digital download on console.
