Sonic Mania is probably what you’ve been referring to all this time as “the other Sonic game” because it looks like a colorful amalgam of classic Sonic gameplay with modern sensibilities, also known as what fans have been clamoring for instead of custom hedgehog creation.
Different strokes for different folks, however, and Sonic Mania is shaping up to be an interesting journey throughout the fastest thing alive’s tenure as a mascot. You won’t have to wait much longer to try it out, either, as it’s landing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on August 15 for $19.99 USD.
Sega dropped a new trailer to go along with the announcement as well, and it looks pretty promising. Sonic Mania is actually a new 2D Sonic side-scrolling game that’s meant to run at 60FPS with HD graphics just like the old sprites of the olden days. You can play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles while staving off new and old bosses culled from Dr. Eggman’s army, and you can even play with other players or against them.
Judging by the trailer and the screens that have been shared already from the upcoming title, there’s plenty to love when new Sonic design meets classic ideas, which is something Sega has been struggling with for some time when it comes to creating new content for Sonic himself. You may remember Sonic Mania from its killer special edition, with a Sonic statue and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive as well as nostalgic classic packaging and other bonuses.
It’s definitely one to pounce on if you grew up with Sonic like many of the rest of us did, but make sure you lock your preorders in before August 15 sneaks up on us, like old age and chili dog burps with Sonic. It’s not good when that happens.
