To this point, the various X-Men movies that have been made have been fairly traditional “comic book” movies. Well, at least up until Logan, which technically counts but feels so little like a comic book movie that it’s hard to remember that it’s about Wolverine. However, the upcoming New Mutants movie is taking things in a different direction. Not just because it’s about, you know, new mutants, but because it’s going to be a straight up horror film.
Direcor Josh Boone, whose biggest credit to date is the decidedly un-horrific The Fault in Our Stars, said, ““We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
That certainly sounds intriguing. Another recent X-Men adjacent property, FX’s Legion, had a heavy horror element to it. That show was also tremendously pretentious and put style over substance, but it showed that horror can work within the X-Men universe. The New Mutants is hoping for a PG-13 rating, and horror fans often blanch at a sub-R outing, but that’s not necessarily a death knell.
Maisie Williams will be playing Wolfsbane, while Anya Taylor-Joy will play Magik. It’s also expected that HenryZaga will be announced as Sunspot soon. The New Mutants may not be the biggest names in the Marvel universe, but so far it sounds like an interesting project.
