CD PROJEKT RED, the creators of The Witcher series of roleplaying games, has invited players to join the free public beta for its next journey into the universe of monster-hunting protagonist, Geralt – GWENT: The Witcher Card Game. The public beta is open now for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
Said CD PROJEKT RED co-founder Marcin Iwinski in a statement: “We’re opening the gates to everyone who wanted to play, but didn’t make it into the closed beta, and – at the same time – we’re introducing some pretty significant content and gameplay changes like adding animated versions of cards for every card in the game, new starter decks, or how weather cards work.”
He went on to ask for feedback from players, adding that “I’m extra curious how all of the community feedback we’ve incorporated will resonate with both current players and those who’re just starting.”
CD PROJEKT RED also put out two new videos to accompany the announcement: a cinematic trailer that introduces us to the medieval rough-and-tumble world of The Witcher and provides a high-level overview of GWENT’s look and gameplay, and a gameplay video that goes into more depth about how to play the game.
As you might expect from the name, GWENT is a digital card game set in The Witcher universe. In it, you compete against friends in fast-paced duels that combine bluffing, on-the-fly decision making, and deck construction that includes cards with spells and special abilities unique to The Witcher.
This isn’t the first time CD PROJEKT RED has made an offshoot game based on The Witcher series of roleplaying games. It also released The Witcher Adventure Game, a physical and digital board game co-made with Fantasy Flight Games. It came out for iOS and Android devices and PC (Steam, GOG), as well as a tabletop version for dinner tables everywhere.
And if that’s not enough Witcher for you, the world of The Witcher (based on a series of Polish fantasy novels) will be turned into a show for Netflix. Because of course it is.
