While you’ll have to wait until August to watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day in eye-blasting 3D, you can see something almost as cool right now. Kramer’s Media, a team of Russian modders, has released an abridged version of Terminator 2 using the Grand Theft Auto V engine, created shot-for-shot and scene-for-scene.
The impressive remake runs just over an hour, but includes the film’s most memorable scenes. Naked Arnie appearing from an electrical time-travel sphere? Check. Vehicular chases through LA’s flood-control channels? Check. Arnie taking a molten metal bath? Check. Most of the boring stuff (character development, plot, talking) has been cut out in favor of iconic action sequences. Other changes are most likely due to the limitations of the GTA 5 engine.
The makers created two versions, one in their native Russian and a second in English. The audio tracks appear to be taken directly from the film, though, so we hope that Paramount Pictures isn’t in a litigious mood.
In fact, a disclaimer near the beginning of the remake warns that the “cover does not claim copyright of the original idea, it’s just a tribute to the film 1991 Terminator 2: Judgement Day (sic) and the actors. Thank you.”
Kramer’s Media says on the YouTube page for the English version that it was surprised that there would be so many foreign fans of the remake, prompting the English-language version to be released. The team also asks for financial and model-making support for future updates.
While the Terminator 2 remake appears to be Kramer’s Media’s biggest project to date, it’s also put out several other videos using the Grand Theft Auto V engine, including a tribute to The Dukes of Hazzard.
Fan-made films like these are on tricky ground legally, so be sure to check it out now before it’s forced to disappear into a vat of digital lava.
