Top Gun came out way back in 1986. The cast was young and vibrant then. Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer could play beach volleyball with ease. It would seem like the time for a sequel to Top Gun had passed. Do we really need a sequel to a silly if competently made movie about hot shot pilots over 30 years later? Well whether or not we need it, we are apparently going to get it, at least if Cruise is to be believed.
WORLDWIDE EXCLUSIVE: @TomCruise just confirmed that Top Gun 2 is happening! “I’m gonna start filming it probably in the next year”. #sun7 pic.twitter.com/X17xvxz4Q4

Cruise was on a morning show in Australia, which is maybe an evening show in America depending on how the time zones shake out, when he dropped a bit of Top Gun 2 news. He said that a sequel will start filming “probably in the next year.” Now, this isn’t the first time that Cruise has expressed belief that a Top Gun sequel will happen, but to say it will probably start filming in the next year is a real step toward making it a reality.
There is still some Top Gun nostalgia out there, and Cruise is still a movie star. As long as Kilmer is on board, leading to a Maverick and Iceman reunion, they might as well do it.
