Ubisoft has finally announced Far Cry 5, releasing a brand new bit of key art to go along with it. According to the small bits of information that have been leaked out so far, it will follow a bizarre religious cult, which you can infer from the Last Supper-like assemblage in the artwork promoting the game.
You can see what appears to be a religious zealot who’s using religious to control and intimidate people in some way, which can be inferred by the man with “sinner” carved into his back, hands tied and facing downward. It’s a very violent scene, and one that invites discussion. Who are these people, why has this man been captured, and what kind of church is this, even? Are these a bunch of backwoods country bumpkins or is there something even more sinister at play?
It looks like a significant detour from what we’re used to, especially for the Far Cry series, and it could make for an extremely exciting adventure. Outlast 2 recently used religion as a prop for its terrifying and perverse narrative to great effect, so the hope is Far Cry 5 can do much the same with the elements it’s already introducing with its first piece of artwork.
Unfortunately we’ll have to wait and see what happens, with Far Cry 5 currently set for release around April 2018. Ubisoft will be “blessing” us with an official announcement trailer as of 9 AM ET on Friday, May 26, so we’ll be here to bring you everything you need to know when it finally debuts.
