One of the more delightful things on the internet is AV Club’s Undercover series. For years, they’ve had bands choose a song from a list to cover, and each band has fewer and fewer songs to choose from until the last band only have one song left to choose. It’s led to a lot of great covers, and also a bunch of tedious GWAR appearances, and the eighth season is about to begin. However, before that, we’ve been treated to a great appetizer featuring The Regrettes.
The band cover Sweet’s “Fox on the Run,” which was also featured in a recent AV Club series designed to promote the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie, as if though that film needed any help. The Regrettes’ cover is pretty awesome, although that’s not surprising. Their debut album, Feel Your Feelings Fool!, came out earlier this year, and it’s quite good. The band combines ’60s girl group sounds with indie rock, basically stepping into the shoes that Dum Dum Girls abandoned. On the other hand, maybe we should be surprised the album is as good as it is, because frontwoman Lydia Night is a 16-year-old child. Remember that band you were in when you were 16? It was terrible. You aren’t Lydia Night.
If you like this cover, do check out Feel Your Feelings Fool! You won’t, ahem, regret it.
